A Canadian in Search of the Emerald City

The intent and purpose of this blog is to inform my loved ones (that's you!) of my comings and goings. While I do love writing and receiving emails, sometimes it just isn't possible to correspond with each of you individually. You may call it "laziness". I call it "proper time management".

I wish I could fast forward 2 weeks

Ok...crunch time. Tired...Bored...wish so much that it were two weeks from now.

Last week...

Monday and Tuesday: Feel like ages ago. Nothing too exciting...reading...preparing for paper writing...
Wednesday: Class and reading all day. At night met up with Lloyd and we went for Mexican. It's no Hernando's Hideaway...but whatcha gonna do...this is Vancouver and you should really be eating sushi.
Thursday: Interview with SHAPE (Safety and Health in Arts Production and Entertainment). Want to get a job there for the summer. Should find out this week (maybe tomorrow) whether or not I get the job...
Friday: Jenn's birthday. We went out to this place called DV8 for a late night meal. I had a burger with apples and almonds on it...sounds pretty crazy...but so yummy. Homefries were good too. Then went out to freaky Club 23 for dancing. Geez...you know you are in Vancouver when you are surrounded by dreadlocks and it reeks of pot. Scary people downtown. Got home at 4 am. Did a bit of homework. Went to bed at 4:45 am.
Saturday: Forced myself to wake up early, approximately 8:45 am (felt guilty about not getting much work done the night before). Dragged myself off to school so that I wouldn't crawl into bed and remain there the whole afternoon. Worked until 6:30 pm then went to Lloyd's to watch a movie (Envy with Ben Stiller and Jack Black) Not a great movie but could have been considerably worse had it not been for my two favourite comedians...
Today: Worked...got a lot done actually. Tired though. Got a call from my favourite Aussie, Victor. He might be coming to visit in Feb...fun! Heard some gossip about Tarek breaking up with his gf (aww...) and Melvyn may be coming to Vancouver (yikes!).

For this week...

Monday: Field trip to the Burnaby incinerator and preparing presentations
Tuesday: Presentation in 503 on my final project (not yet complete but the ideas are floating around in my head), Presentation in Tox and hand in Aflatoxin paper
Wednesday: Field trip to the sewage treatment plant, maybe skipping Research in Progress (but they are serving food...)
Thursday: Last Safety class!! Work on poster.
Friday: Poster presentation for 501. Ours is going to be the prettiest...colour co-ordinated, nice layout...I like doing this kind of thing...

Sleepy...

Yes...still alive

Sorry I have not written in awhile, but I've been pretty busy recently. End of semester and everything is due in the next three weeks. I get exhausted just thinking about it. I did have an incredibly productive weekend though.

- Friday afternoon took a trip downtown to hunt for a belt buckle for Jenn's birthday. Anyway, found a pretty slick one "Made in Canada", pewter with lovely Native-looking sun design on it. I'm thinking of starting to wear belt buckles myself...They look pretty cool.
- Finished 3 assignments between Friday night and 5 minutes ago. The countdown is now: 2 major assignments, 2 exams and a couple of mini-presentations. Very manageable.
- Gave the bathroom a thorough cleaning and vacuumed my room.
- Made Clam Linguini...so simple and soooo tasty.

Pretty sad, eh. The highlights of my weekend revolve around a one-hour shopping excursion, homework and food...

My window appears to be leaking. Found a little puddle on the sill this morning. Nothing that can't be fixed with a little caulking, but why is it that I always get stuck with the room that leaks?

Think I may be coming down with something...my throat is tightening up. Will take some Buckleys and go to bed.

Ho hum...

5 weeks left!

The semester has just flown by, and the next month should definitely prove to be the worst:
- 3 exams
- 4 major assignments
- 3 less than major assignments

Cannot wait, but still sticking to my schedule, lest I go insane: work-out mid-week and one weekend night off. The rest of the time...nose to the grindstone.

Perhaps the most exciting development of this week is that I may get a job! And a scholarship! The job is doing research for the entertainment industry on the toxicity of the paints they use for their props and then searching for alternatives. It's in Vancouver (their head office is at Granville and Broadway -ish), the pay is really good (if you include the NSERC scholarship) and if I get it, then it means that I don't have to work at some oil and gas company for the summer! The only problem is, that two other students are interested in it as well. I think my chances are pretty good considering my background relative to their backgrounds (Kinesiology and Forestry). But we'll see. The interviews are on Nov 25, so I should know by Christmas.

Handed in two assignments this week: one on ventilation systems (eugh!) and one on statistics (double eugh!). This weekend I am working on my Toxicology paper on Aflatoxins. Anything that has the word "toxin" in its name has got to be pretty bad, eh? Well, they contaminate nearly every food source and they cause liver cancer, yikes...

Went to a beginner's yoga class with Britta yesterday morning. The teacher went very slowly so it wasn't as good of a workout as the class i went to last week which wasn't a beginner's class. My shoulders are still hurting. My inner thighs hurt too, but I think that's more from the rollerblading than the yoga. Anywho, I feel VERY Vancouver now, with the yoga. I should buy an overpriced pair of Lululemon pants and wear them to class...

I also had a date last night, and I had a surprisingly good time. I went into it with fears that it would be another Iain situation...but it wasn't that bad. He talks alot, more than me even. But he has interesting things to say. But then again, Iain had interesting things to say at first...and then he kept saying them over and over again...Anyway, so this Lloyd guy is an artist. Not a starving one. But an artist none the less. Good or bad? Not sure...In the very least I can take him to the Chan centre and he can make comments about how its structure is reminiscent of the Victorian-era concert halls with the seats stacked up and encircling the stage. (See...interesting...) But yeah...I'd go out with him again.

Ok...off to write about aflatoxins. Perhaps I can finish this thing by tonight!
